Part of The Unexplored Wilderness — Clay Smith's ongoing series born from a 2020 research residency in Jordan, where he worked in deliberate isolation using materials gathered from local souks: canvas, spices, and fabric dye, alongside Dead Sea Mud and water collected from the River Jordan's Baptist Site. The Jordan Mines IV closes the quartet with the same excavated intensity — deep ochres, burnt reds, and blacks that speak of the earth, of isolation, of materials that carry a place within them. Collected together or individually, these four works form one of the most coherent bodies of work in Smith's practice.
