Part of The Unexplored Wilderness — Clay Smith's ongoing series born from a 2020 research residency in Jordan, where he worked in deliberate isolation using materials gathered from local souks: canvas, spices, and fabric dye, alongside Dead Sea Mud and water collected from the River Jordan's Baptist Site. The Jordan Mines I carries geological weight — deep ochres, burnt reds, and blacks pressed into the surface with the quality of something excavated and revealed. A work that holds landscape, memory, and material in one compressed plane.
